Columbia Falls SD#6 Cold Weather Statement

As we move into the cold temperatures and winter weather this week we wanted to send a message to you regarding our inclement weather procedures. 

 

At this time we plan to have normal school operations throughout the school week. However, if extreme cold temperatures or weather impact our buses' ability to travel or weather presents too many challenges for normal school operations, we would inform you of a school closure. Many times closures occur due to transportation challenges--buses unable to run, severe road conditions, emergency only travel and / or road closures. School closure decisions are based on the safety of our students and staff.

 

• If and when a decision to close school is made, the district will notify you by phone message, text, email, and on our district and school websites. No news regarding a closure means business as usual. If you haven't signed up for text alerts contact your child's school to update your cell phone number and opt in.

• We typically only email, text, call, and provide information if schools are closed. We aim to make these announcements by 6:00 AM if possible.

• If school remains open during below zero conditions we ask for extra care and support from families to ensure that our students stay safe. Please make sure students are adequately prepared and dressed for the conditions. 

• Please do not leave children unattended at bus stops for extended periods of time. Students who ride buses should stay indoors until their bus has arrived. 

• If students walk to school, please make sure they are able to make it to school. They may need an alternative plan to get to school.

• Students will remain indoors for recess when temperatures are below zero or when there is a below zero wind chill factor.

• Please reach out to your school's building administrator or counselors if a student is in need of cold weather clothing items. We can help connect you with resources.

• Our route buses and activity buses are outfitted with precautionary measures to help with mechanical issues. Please ensure that your students are prepared for riding in a bus during winter weather conditions.

• Please review our Inclement Weather Procedure Guidelines that were approved in December of 2023.

 

We understand that your situation may be different from the situations that are present in other locations. Please keep the safety of your family in mind when you are making your own personal decisions during inclement weather situations.
